$1,500.00
A large Maya cylinder vase from Jutiapa in southern Guatemala, ca. 600 - 900 AD. This elegant creamware example is 9-3/4" high, 6-1/2" wide at the flaring rim and is decorated with a trio of deeply incised Water Birds. The large birds are executed in fine detail and remnants of rare negative resist paint are still visible. The rim band consists of molded glyphs, a characteristic type for vessels from Jutiapa. Overall in excellent condition, with a couple of superbly restored stress cracks.
Cf. Kelemen "Medieval American Art", plate 139b, for similar example from The University Museum - Philadelphia, PA.
